We've all played a video game or two before. You've probably even played a game against the computer. This date became a significant one for gamers and computer engineers alike in 1997. A chess match was held between Gary Kasparov and IBM's Deep Blue computer. At that time, Kasparov was a world-champion chess player and Deep Blue was the fastest computer that could play chess. The year before, Kasparov beat a different version of Deep Blue. This time, however, Kasparov was defeated. Deep Blue won the six-game match and became the first computer to beat a real world champion.

1996年2月10日，卡斯帕洛夫就曾與超級電腦（super computer）深藍進行比賽，當時深藍是落敗的一方。爾後，深藍經其研究小組加以改良，於1997年5月再度挑戰卡斯帕洛夫，比賽在該月11日結束， 結果是深藍擊敗了卡斯帕洛夫。賽後卡斯帕洛夫表示，他不相信有這樣優越的電腦，因為深藍的表現完全沒有電腦程式的慣性，因此他要求重賽。IBM公司不但回 絕，還迅速將深藍拆卸，使卡斯帕洛夫無法如願以償地再戰一回。
