’I can’t take it!’ cried Kadhafi interpreter

If Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi’s rambling, podium-hogging speech at the United Nations tried the patience of many UN delegates, spare a thought for his simultaneous interpreter.

The Libyan’s interpreter managed to hang on for the first 75 minutes of Wednesday’s epic before crying: "I just can’t take it anymore!" reported the New York Post daily.

"His interpreter just collapsed," a colleague was quoted as saying by the Post. "This is the first time I have seen this in 25 years."

Police say the boy faked his kidnapping Friday to avoid bringing home a bad report card, saying that a man with a pistol snatched him after he left Ed White Middle School.

Ikea, the Swedish furniture chain, says it never expected such a backlash after switching typeface in its latest catalog.

The company’s decision to make its first such font change in 50 years — from the iconic Futura typeface to the Verdana one — has caused a worldwide reaction on the Internet.

"We’re surprised," Ikea spokeswoman Camilla Meiby said. "But I think it’s mainly experts who have expressed their views, people who are interested in fonts. I don’t think the broad public is that interested."

Verdana was invented by Microsoft for use on a computer screen, not on paper. Its wide, open letters with space between characters are designed to increase legibility on small computer screens.

Ikea said that in order to reach many people in many different ways, it needed a font that works in both digital and print media.

But some Ikea fans were outraged, finding Verdana less elegant than Futura. The online forum Typophile ended its first post with the words, "It’s a sad day."

The Great Flu(www.thegreatflu.com)allows players to choose their viral adversary, pick the part of the world it spreads in and then control how to manage the outbreak given a limited amount of funds and medications.

It’s 9.5 feet wide and 42 feet long (2.9 meters wide by 12.8 meters long) and is billed as the narrowest house in New York City. But there’s nothing small about its asking price: $2.7 million.

Vegetative patients ’still learn’

Patients with severe brain damage who do not appear to have signs of consciousness still seem able to learn, a Cambridge University study suggests.

Researchers tested for Pavlovian-like responses in 22 people in a persistent vegetative state by playing a noise prior to a puff of air to the eye. Some subjects learnt to anticipate the puff of air causing the eye muscles to twitch, Nature Neuroscience reported.

Study leader Dr Tristan Bekinschtein from the University of Cambridge said the consensus had been that learning to link one stimulus with another - in this case a noise and a puff of air - was dependent on explicit awareness of the association.

But the study, where up to 70 puffs of air were delivered over a 25 minute period, showed that this sort of conditioning is possible even in patients who are not conscious.

Electrodes positioned by the eyes picked up whether the muscles began to respond or not. And a control experiment doing the same tests on people under general anaesthesia did not produce the same responses, suggesting that the learning does not happen when truly unconscious, and that some patients may have some level of consciousness not apparent on traditional tests.

Granny’s Sight Restored With Tooth Implant

A formerly blind grandmother has regained her sight after surgeons implanted a tooth in her eye.

American granny Sharron Thornton, 60, was blind for nine years after contracting Stevens-Johnsons syndrome, a rare disease that scarred her cornea. But doctors in Miami, Florida, made history after extracting her canine and drilling an optical cylinder lens into it.

Ms Thornton is the first person ever to have her "eye tooth" taken out, reshaped and inserted in this type of surgery. She said: "We take sight for granted, not realising that it can be lost at any moment. This truly is a miracle.

The tooth and the lens were implanted under her skin for two months so they could bond. They were then implanted in the centre of her eye, after a series of procedures to prepare the socket.

The grandmother first realised she could see when doctors put antibiotics in her eye and she could tell the liquid was yellow. Once bandages were removed, she was able to recognise objects and faces within a few hours. Two weeks later she was able to read newspapers.

Sleep-deprived doctors told to drink coffee

Exhausted Australian doctors have been told to drink up to six cups of coffee a day to stay awake during extended shifts, building pressure on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to seize control of state-run hospitals.

A document on fatigue management released by health officials in Queensland state recommended doctors ingest 400 milligrams of caffeine to stay awake on the job, or the equivalent of six cups of coffee, after warnings that patients were dying.

"For management to just say go and have a cup of coffee and get over tiredness, it cheapens the whole issue," Australian Medical Association Vice President Steven Hambleton told Reuters.

"We are talking about serious issues here, and this is not just a serious suggestion at all. It can’t be a weakness to say you’re dog tired," he said.

Australia’s national centre-left government is under pressure to seize control of the nation’s ailing public hospital system, currently managed by state governments with federal funding support.

Houston schools ban ’sexting’

In Houston, Texas, thousands of students are returning to school to discover a new rule:no "sexting" -- the distribution of nude or semi-nude photographs or videos by text message.

"Some principals raised the issue, so we included a provision saying sending, receiving, possessing sexually suggestive messages is forbidden," said Hans Graff, assistant general counsel at the Houston Independent School district.

A recent study found 22 percent of US teenage girls and 18 percent of teenage boys have sent messages or posted images or video online showing them nude or semi-nude.

"A student may be sending pictures to their boyfriend and they break up and he sends it to everybody," said Graff.

Aside from the disruption and trauma the practice can cause, Graff warns that the pictures potentially violate child pornography laws that ban sexually suggestive pictures of underage children.

"Any pictures of an underage child could potentially be child pornography and we are not really interested in seeing students punished criminally," he said.

"We want to put them on notice that it’s just not something that really belongs in school."

Costume provokes devil of a row

Bolivia and Peru are not always on the best of terms but their latest row is not of a political nature - it’s down to the choice of a dress.

For her appearance at the Miss Universe contest in the Bahamas recently, Miss Peru has chosen a dress inspired by an Andean dance popular in both nations.

Bolivia has accused the Miss Peru organisers of unfairly appropriating Bolivian cultural heritage. Bolivian Culture Minister Pablo Groux was quoted in Peruvian newspapers as saying that Bolivia would sue.

Peru, meanwhile, coolly maintains the dance is part of the culture of the Altiplano, or high plateau, which straddles the two countries.

In Peru La Diablada, or the Devil’s Dance, is played at the carnival of Puno in the south of the country. In Bolivia, it is the main dance at the carnival in the city of Oruro which has been given special cultural heritage status by the UN.

However most historians agree that La Diablada dates from colonial times, before Peru and Bolivia existed as independent nations.

Australia has pledged 7.8 million US dollars this year to help save more than 100 indigenous languages which are in grave danger of dying out.

Arts Minister Peter Garrett said the money would be spent on translation services, tests for children and a feasibility study for a national centre for Aboriginal languages.

"These languages are... a significant part of Australia’s heritage and we must ensure they are protected for the benefit of future generations," Garrett said.

"A focused and coordinated national approach is critical to safeguard indigenous culture and save these unique languages."

Australia has 145 languages and dialects with 110 at risk, according to a 2005 report, as they are often spoken only by small groups of over-40s. About 30,000 people are currently studying indigenous languages around the country.

Sheikh Hasina told officials that doing so would minimise their use of air-conditioners. Bangladesh suffers from daily power cuts as power plants are unable to meet the country’s demand.

A senior official told the BBC the government would soon encourage businesses to follow its example.

Bangladesh’s official dress code has been rewritten - after Sheikh Hasina ordered government employees to do more to ease the country’s energy shortage. Even ministers now will no longer be expected to wear suits and ties.

During the hot months between March and November, men have been ordered to wear trousers and shirts instead, and these do not have to be tucked in any more.

Officials and ministers have also been told not to turn their air-conditioners below 24C. In June, the government introduced daylight saving, and the clocks moved forward by one hour, in another attempt to cut energy consumption.

An eight-year-old cheetah called Sarah has broken the world speed record for land animals. Covering 100 metres in 6.13 seconds, Sarah set a new speed record for all land mammals in Cincinnati.

The middle-aged cheetah shaved more than 3 seconds off the fastest human time, 9.58 seconds, set by Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt this year.

Man stole woman’s car on 1st date

In what must rank as one of the worst first dates in history, police say that a man first skipped out on the restaurant bill - and then stole his date’s car.

Authorities say 23-year-old Terrance Dejuan McCoy had dinner with a woman April 24 at Buffalo Wild Wings in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale. The woman says the two met a week earlier at a Detroit casino and she knew McCoy only as ’Chris.’

The woman told police that McCoy said he left his wallet in her car and asked for keys. He then sped away in the 2000 Chevrolet Impala.

The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak reports that police identified McCoy by a photo he’d sent to the woman’s cell phone, and his phone number.

The car was found in Detroit May 5 with the radio missing. McCoy was arrested and Ferndale officers brought him back to the city July 25.

Groom fixes teeth to marry dentist’s daughter

Gordon Taylor of Wight Isle, 32, was told to get his teeth fixed before he could walk down the aisle with Sarah Lewis, 26, daughter of a dentist.

Taylor must have a series of fillings and cosmetic surgery, and Lewis’s father, Dr Philip Lewis, even made him wear a ’snap-on smile’ cosmetic denture for the wedding.

"I didn’t mean to neglect my teeth, I guess it was just the lifestyle I was leading," said Mr Taylor.

"When I met Sarah, I guess her family noticed them more than most because her father is a dentist."

Dr Lewis, 56, admitted he was horrified by the sight of his future son-in-law’s teeth. Sarah’s mother Joy, who works as a receptionist at Dr Lewis’s surgery, added: "Gordon is a lovely chap but he had awful teeth, really awful teeth."

And his bride said she was thrilled Mr Taylor had agreed to undergo the dental work to win her hand.

Nymphs and classics help Europe bridge its language divide

If you thought that English is the language of the 21st century, think again. In Europe, the future could be Latin.

In the EU, languages are big political business. Each member state fights fiercely for its national tongue, with EU texts routinely translated into all 23 of the bloc’s official languages.

But trouble starts when there is only room to use one word from one language - such as when creating an internet domain name.

English, the EU’s most widespread language, might seem to have the advantage in such questions. But other member states fear that too much English use would cement it as the EU’s unofficial working tongue, a politically impossible position.

"English has become the lingua franca, but we are not allowed to say so," one EU linguist commented.

The EU’s solution has been to find a politically neutral language in the only place it could realistically look: European history.

With Latin at the root of many of the technical, scientific, religious and legal terms in Europe, Virgil’s language is perfectly placed to become the EU’s virtual language.

My mother tongue is Hakka.(我的母語是客家語。)

Our object is to further cement trade relations.(我們的目標是要進一步加強貿易關係。)

The international business community sees English as a lingua franca.(國際商務社群視英語為通用語言。)

NYC hot dog vendor evicted over whopping rent bill

Homeowners aren’t the only ones in hot water over overpriced real estate. A New York City hot dog vendor has been evicted from his prize spot outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art because he couldn’t pay a whopping rent bill of nearly $54,000 a month.

Snack cart owner Pasang Sherpa of Queens had a deal with the city’s parks department that required him to pay almost $643,000 per year for the vending rights near the museum steps.

He says he was $310,000 behind on his payments when he was evicted.

But another museum row hot dog vendor, Dan Rossi, said Sherpa can sell dogs at one of his carts. "He’s gonna work for me now," said Rossi. "Nobody’s gonna touch him now without talking to me."

Sherpa and Rossi say the city needs to do a better job keeping so called "black market" hot dog vendors away from the Met.

These unlicensed dealers offer dogs and drinks for less money than the legit businessmen, whose prices are set by the Parks Department.

’Visual diet’ links to attraction 「

Girls who attend single-sex schools are more attracted to feminine looking boys, researchers have claimed. The St Andrews University-led study suggested a girls-only education could have a "significant impact" on what the youngsters found attractive.

Boys at all-male schools proved less susceptible to the effect, although the study found they did prefer the company of boys with more masculine faces.

The effect was weakened if children had siblings of the opposite sex at home. The research team said the results suggested a person’s "visual diet" influenced what they thought was attractive.

They asked 240 children, aged 11-15, attending co-educational and single-sex schools, to rate faces in terms of attractiveness.

It suggested female pupils at single-sex schools, compared with those at mixed schools, had a significantly stronger preference for facial femininity in both male and female faces.

Authorities in Minnesota said a goat in the trunk of a woman’s car when she took it to a repair shop has been placed in the care of a veterinarian.

James Prusci, an auto repairman with Tires Plus in Winona, said a woman came in to the store just before noon Friday and informed him, there was a live goat in her trunk, the Winona Daily News reported Monday.

Is boy reincarnation of dead fighter pilot?

11-year-old US boy James Leininger could be the reincarnation of a Second World War fighter pilot, according to his parents.

From an early age, James would play with nothing else but planes, his parents said. But he has suffered from regular nightmares about being shot down in a plane when he was 2.

Mrs Leininger said: "In the throes of his nightmares you couldn’t work out what he was saying." "But two or three months in, I heard him saying, ’Airplane crash, plane on fire, little man can’t get out’, and he said the plane was shot down by the Japanese. It chilled me to my bone hearing this."

James told his father Bruce he flew a Corsair, and the name of the boat he took off from " Natoma" and he flew with "Jack Larson." And the boy pointed at a picture of Iwo Jima and said that was where he was shot down.

After some research, Bruce discovered both the names were real, and Larson is living in Arkansas. He also found that just one pilot died during the battle of Iwo Jima, James M Huston Jnr, 21. He was shot down on March 3, 1945.

And now the highly educated parents have become convinced their son has had a former life.

Russia’s Putin strips for stardom, again

Eat your heart out, Sarkozy. Stand back, Barack. Vladimir Putin proved that even a gimlet-eyed Russian politician can rise to the status of global celebrity in the multimedia age, as pictures of his bare chest and manly deeds on Siberian holiday caused tongues to wag worldwide.

Two state-owned Russian television channels recently broadcasted video of Putin’s gym-toned arms chopping through the water in a butterfly stroke and others showing him riding bare-chested on horseback.

Within hours, everyone from the BBC to the tabloids seized on the story, apparently grateful for a bit of middle-aged beefcake in August, the slowest of news months.

Moscow invented the cult of personality, and Putin has long been touted as a kind of post-Soviet superman here.

His feats play differently at home and abroad, drawing admiration from an adoring Russian public and scorn from skeptics abroad.

Researchers are working on integrating nanotechnology with biological materials to create more powerful computers, medical tools and even prosthetics.

Scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced this week that they have built a hybrid platform out of a mixture of biological and manmade materials. The platform is enabling them to build prototypes of what they’re calling bio-nanoelectronic devices.

The platform, according to the laboratory, is based on nanowires that are coated in lipids, which are essential structural components of living cells. By combining the nanowires with the lipids, the resulting platform becomes more complex, which enables the hybrid material to convert signals much faster than today’s most powerful computers.

Various scientific teams are working to combine computer and electronic technology with biological materials.

During their first year they will shed tears for three hours a day when they need changing, feeding or entertaining. When they grow older, teenage girls cry for approximately 2 hours and 13 minutes a week and by their mid 20s they will cry for as much as 2.24 hours a week after falling out with their partner, watching a soppy film or losing a loved one.

The poll of 3,000 people, conducted by www.TheBabyWebsite.com, shows the reasons why women cry change dramatically over our lifetime.

Between the ages of one and three years of age children cry for up to 2 hours and five minutes a day. Their main reasons for crying include falling over, hurting themselves and feeling tired.

And between the ages of four and 12 years old children continue to cry for 2 hours and 11 minutes a week. Children in this age bracket are most likely to cry after hurting themselves, being told off for doing something naughty or feeling poorly.

Dutch museum says ’moon rock’ worthless wood

A piece of moon rock showcased in a key Amsterdam museum is nothing but petrified wood, museum authorities said of a gift made to a former Dutch prime minister by a US envoy.

The exhibit at the Rijksmuseum, originally gifted to Willem Drees in 1969 by then US ambassador William Middendorf as a souvenir of a pathbreaking trip by three US astronauts on July 20, 1969.

"When we received it, we insured it for 100,000 florins or 50,000 euros in today’s money," said Xandra van Gelder, the editor-in-chief of the museum’s internal magazine.

But she told AFP that it was "hardly worth 50 euros," adding that museum authorities had been alerted by space and other experts. This was confirmed by independent studies on the object, which is roughly the size of a matchbox.

"What is also strange is that in 1969, when Willem Drees was given this ’rock,’ it was 11 years after he had stepped down as prime minister."

Cop arrests girl, 5 - twice

A German police chief has come under fire after arresting a five-year-old girl for playing too roughly with his son - and then charging her for giving him the finger.

Little Monika Kretzmer was in tears when the police chief drove her home under arrest when she upset his son at a sandpit.

But the furious cop arrested her again a few days later when she saw him in uniform and allegedly stuck a finger up at him.

The police chief despatched a team of officers to the family home in Chiemgau, Germany, to warn her parents of her actions and tell them she would be charged with anti social behaviour.

But family lawyer Roland Netzer said: "This sort of behaviour by the police in the city casts a shadow over their reputation. We have filed a complaint with the Interior Ministry and we can assure the policeman she doesn’t even know what it means to show someone the finger."
