German Chancellor Angela Merkel received a poor grade in Marxist-Leninist theory during her time as a student in former communist East Germany, according to a magazine report published on Sunday.

After three years of advanced studies of Marxism-Leninism, Merkel’s ideology professor Joachim Rittershaus judged her only "satisfactory" in the subject, according to Der Spiegel newsweekly.

Merkel, 29 at the time, got the same low mark three years later for her final dissertation on the subject, which is now lost, added Spiegel.

For her research in physics, in which she eventually won a doctorate, she received a "very good" mark, the magazine said.
