Facing the possibility of a public backlash as a result of record bonuses this year, Goldman Sachs is considering requiring its executives to donate a portion of their salaries to charity, according to a report in The New York Times.
Goldman has long been the highest-paying firm on Wall Street, and this year is no exception. Analysts expect the firm to set aside more than $17 billion for bonuses for its approximately 30,000 employees.
According to the Times, Goldman’s charity plans could be similar to one that Bear Stearns had before the firm went under. Top earners at Bear were required to donate 4% of their annual bonuses to charity, and the firm made bonus recipients provide tax returns as proof.
Goldman, while its business has been stellar, has faced a public relations disaster. The firm announced late last year it would donate $200 million from its foundation along with creating a $500 million fund to help small businesses.
Goldman has also said its 30 top executives would receive bonuses in stock, not cash.
