In 2004, a new government took control of Spain. One of its goals was to make same-sex marriages legal. In 2005, the Spanish parliament passed a law allowing same-sex marriage. It also allowed gay couples to adopt children. On this date in 2005, they all became legal. By doing so, Spain became the third country in the world to pass this kind of law. Only the Netherlands and Belgium had already put this policy into practice. In the first year after the law was passed, nearly 4,500 gay couples got married in Spain.
