Despite being quite famous today, Nintendo is a company with a long and little-known history. The company was actually founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi in Japan on this date in 1889. Its main function was to produce handmade playing cards used for many different kinds of Japanese games. Later on, the company tried several other business ventures, including taxi services, love hotels, and instant meals. Then in 1974, Nintendo broke into the world of video games, for which it is best-known today. Clearly business has been good because it is now valued at over US$85 billion.

儘管任天堂公司現在很有名，但它卻有很長的一段歷史是鮮為人知的。其實早在1889年的今日，山內房治郎就創立了任天堂公司。它主要的業務是製造各種不同日本遊戲中所使用的手製紙牌。後來任天堂還試圖發展其它事業，包括計程車服務、賓館和速食餐點。在1974年，任天堂開始進軍電玩界，也就是如今它最出名的一項產業。它們這門生意顯然經營得不錯，因為現在任天堂公司的市值超過850億美金。
