Every country has its own unique currency. The designs for the bills and coins are carefully planned because they are important to the country's identity. On this date in 1909, the first Lincoln penny was issued in the US. This design was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of US President Abraham Lincoln's birth. The front of the penny has not changed much from the original design, which was a profile of Lincoln's head and shoulders. However, the back of the penny has. In 1959, the image became the Lincoln Memorial. In 2009, four designs were issued in honor of Lincoln's 200th birthday. In 2010, a permanent design with a Union Shield came out.

林肯一分硬幣（圖為1909年首次發行版本，網路照片）是美國有史以來流 通最久的硬幣，由銅鋅合金（copper-zinc alloy）鑄造。最初的硬幣表面設計除了林肯的人頭像外，還鑄有IN GOD WE TRUST（我們信仰上帝）及LIBERTY（自由）的字樣；而硬幣的背面則鑄有金額及UNITED STATES OF AMERICA（美利堅合眾國）的字樣。硬幣的背面在1959年以前是文字ONE CENT和UNITED STATES OF AMERICA，1959年後才改為林肯紀念堂。
