Wu Hsing-kuo 英雄不卸甲 吳興國

As a young boy, Wu Hsing-kuo lost his father in the Chinese civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists.❶ On the strength of his singing voice, he was accepted to the National Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy at the age of 11. Over the next eight years, he received 1)intensive training in Beijing opera, learning to perform both wusheng (male 2)warrior) and laosheng (old male) roles. In university, Wu was 3)exposed to the Western 4)theatrical tradition, studying Shakespeare and other classics. He also came to the attention of famous Taiwanese 5)choreographer Lin Huai-min, who invited him to join his Cloud Gate Dance Theater.
